IDEA-STD-1010-B Standards Doc

Acceptability of Electronic Components Distributed in the Open Market

IDEA-STD-1010-B was developed by a group of more than 30 industry subject matter experts who dedicated over 5000 collective hours to update the content and format of the new revision. Some of the changes and additions include the following:
  • A new design and format that improve readability, user friendliness, and flow of information
  • Updated and expanded Terms and Definitions section
  • Over 50% more photo examples throughout the text
  • An increased focus on the inspection process
  • A new section that provides references and guidelines to using Test Services Companies
  • An informational section that introduces advanced inspection techniques
  • A new photo library section with easy to find examples that refer back to inspection information

IDEA-STD-1010 was created to provide inspection processes and criteria that can be incorporated into the Quality Management System of any industry stakeholder, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Electronic Management Service (EMS) Providers, Authorized (Franchise) Distributors, and Independent Distributors, to assist each organization with the implementation and maintenance of counterfeit mitigation programs.

The apparent increase in counterfeit activity requires that all sectors within the electronic component industry that inspect electronic components ensure that every Inspector is trained in the unique techniques and attributes necessary to detect counterfeit parts, as conventional inspection techniques for substandard components do not incorporate the targeted tools needed to identify suspect counterfeit characteristics.

The Independent Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) and its Members are highly aware of and deeply concerned with the proliferation of counterfeit electronics and the threat they pose to national safety and security as well as the impact this threat has on commerce. IDEA firmly believes that the answer to conquering this dangerous problem resides within an expanded and concerted effort in the cooperation and education of all stakeholders in counterfeit mitigation practices through the implementation of relevant standards, training, and certification.IDEA-STD-1010B:Acceptability of Electronic Components Distributed in the Open Market IDEA-STD-1010 is the first and leading quality standard for the visual inspection of electronic components and was designed as a technical resource to serve the electronic component industry regarding the detection of substandard and counterfeit components. Cited in AS5553 and adopted by NASA, this Standard has sold in more than nineteen (19) countries and is based upon techniques developed as a collaborative effort of the industry’s leading Independent Distributors.
